Feeding Your Baby: Starting Solid Foods

  • When your baby starts solid foods, you can purchase thicker baby foods, or you can mash, cut up, or grind foods. Whatever you do, continue to test new foods to look for any allergic reactions.
  • You still must supervise your toddler's meals in case of choking.
  • Remember to limit the amount of juice your baby drinks to a total of 4 to 6 ounces a day - too much juice can fill a baby up, leaving little room for more nutritious foods. We recommend that you dilute juice with water. Do not allow your baby to fall asleep with a bottle of juice because this may cause dental problems such as cavities.
  • When your baby begins to drink cow's milk (after a year of life), make sure they drink whole milk until their second birthday.
  • Try giving your baby small foods like beans or cereal to eat. They will get practice at using their small motor skills by picking up the food with their thumb and little finger.
