| Cooking with Kids: Packing Lunches |
 |
Kid-Friendly Lunch Ideas |
Use cookie cutters to cut out sandwiches in the shape of stars, hearts, etc.
Make fruit, vegetable, or cheese kabobs for a fun way to give them their vitamins.
Or
get kids to make their own lunch - that way they are more likely to eat it. |
 |
Healthy Choices |
Give kids a variety of foods. Encourage milk or water to drink for kids.
Give salads instead of sandwiches when you can. For a nutritious and low calorie lunch, pack some vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower or carrots. Add a small container of dip or salad dressing and you've got a great snack or lunch addition.
|
 |
Packing Strategies |
Use ice packs to keep foods cold. Or freeze a juice
box or bottled water - it will thaw by lunch time.
A thermos can keep things hot as well as cold, which opens up a lot
of lunchtime possibilities. How about soups, or pastas or even stir-frys?
A wide mouthed thermos container can be the brown bagger's best friend.
Just fill with piping hot food and seal. It will stay hot until lunchtime.

Quick Prep Ideas |
If you have to make a lot of sandwiches, do an assembly line - lay out the bread and add everything on.
When you are making dinner the night before, think about what can double as a lunch. Chicken can make chicken salad, a piece of beef can be cut up and rolled in a tortilla with cheese and vegetables.
